This is a quick and easy drill to practice word recognition and to lengthen eye fixation span. Reading and becoming familiar with these common phrases will allow your child to see a small group of words instead of reading one word at a time. 

Read these along with your child at least twice each evening. Try adding some of your own!

 up in the tree down the road in the woods
down the path make cookies a big bad wolf
boys and girls play a game little dogs
look at me in the house under the bed
 come here in the sky under the tree
out in the yard on the shelf at noon
in the afternoon at night the next day
in the morning a rainy day a sunny day
down the road until tomorrow a snowy day
went downtown beside the house across the street
around the corner around the bend in Washington
up in the air some time ago last winter
in the hall  at lunchtime next year.
